Things You Need To Know
What exactly are grain/silage bags?
Grain and silage bags are large, heavy-duty polyethylene tubes (typically 6-12+ feet in diameter and 100-300+ feet long) designed for hermetic (airtight) storage of harvested grains (like corn, wheat, soybeans) or fermented feed (silage, haylage, high-moisture corn). They provide a flexible, cost-effective alternative to traditional silos or bins.
What are the MAIN benefits of using bags vs. traditional storage?
Lower upfront cost: Significantly cheaper than building bins or silos.
Flexibility & Scalability: Store different commodities, adjust volume year-to-year, use in various locations.
Hermetic Seal: Excludes oxygen, preventing spoilage, mold growth, insect infestation, and preserving nutritional value (especially crucial for silage).
Reduced Waste: Minimizes dry matter losses compared to open piles or poorly sealed structures.
Speed: Faster to fill than many fixed structures.
How long can grain/silage be stored in the bags?
Grain: Properly sealed dry grain can often be stored for 12-18 months, sometimes longer, depending on initial moisture content, temperature, and bag quality.
Silage/Haylage: Designed for the entire feeding season (typically 6-12 months). Once opened, feed out should be relatively quick.
Key Factor: Integrity of the seal and absence of punctures are critical for maximum storage life.
How durable are the bags? Can they withstand weather and animals?
Our bags are made from multi-layer, UV-stabilized polyethylene for superior strength and weather resistance (sun, rain, wind).
They are puncture-resistant, but physical damage is the biggest risk. Protection from:
Rodents: Use bait stations/traps around the perimeter.
Birds: Deterrents are helpful.
Machinery: Be extremely careful during filling, inspection, and feed-out. Avoid driving near them.
Sharp Objects: Clear the site thoroughly before laying the bag.
What moisture content is safe for bagging?
Grain: Must be dried to a safe, stable moisture level before bagging (e.g., corn <15%, wheat <13.5%). Bagging wet grain leads to spoilage.
Silage/Haylage: Requires adequate moisture for proper fermentation (typically 50-65% moisture). Too dry prevents fermentation; too wet causes undesirable fermentation and effluent seepage. Consult specific recommendations for your crop.
How do I unload the silage/grain?
Silage: Use a specialized bag loader (face shaver) that cuts a controlled opening across the width of the bag and removes silage in layers.
Grain: Can be unloaded using a grain vacuum, specialized bag unloader, or by carefully cutting an opening and using a front-end loader (take extreme care not to puncture the bag further). Always start at the sealed end opposite the filling end.
What happens if the bag gets punctured?
Repair Immediately! Use high-quality, UV-resistant polyethylene repair tape specifically designed for silage/grain bags. Clean and dry the area around the puncture thoroughly before applying the tape, ensuring a complete seal over the hole. Small punctures repaired quickly minimize losses.
How much does it cost per ton/bushel to store in bags?
Costs include the bag itself, bagger rental/operation, site prep, and labor. Generally, it's very cost-effective compared to building permanent storage. The cost per ton decreases significantly with larger bag sizes and volumes stored. Contact us for a specific calculation based on your needs.
